Detectives Lt. Fred Dingertopadre and Sgt. Michael Martic took Jacob J. Angarita -- a 23-year-old former North Bergen High School student from Guttenberg -- into custody at a Union City homeless shelter just before noon Friday, Police Chief Martin Kahn told Daily Voice.

Angarita was wearing a Miami Dolphins baseball cap and carrying a messenger bag when he grabbed a donation jar dedicated to helping needy families in El Salvador from Alfaro's Restaurant on Anderson Avenue on Wednesday, Kahn told Daily Voice.

He also took a tip jar containing $50 from El Trancazo Restaurant on Fairview Avenue, Kahn said.

Theft charges were being prepared, the chief said.

Angarita also had an outstanding warrant out of Hoboken, he said.
