EDGEWATER, N.J. -- The Eleanor Van Gelder Elementary School was placed on lockdown today after a maintenance staff member spotted a shirtless man standing near a bush on the grounds.
"He never approached anyone, never attempted to enter the school, then left without incident," Police Chief William Skidmore told Daily Voice this afternon.
The man ran off as police responded around 11 a.m., the staffer told them, according to Schools Supt. Kerry Postma.
"For safety reasons, the school went into lockdown mode and secured all outside doors," she said.
Officers searched the school and determined that the man hadn't entered, said Postma.
They also searched the property and surrounding area, said the superintendent, who lifted the lockdown at 12:30 p.m.
Police were remaining at the school for the rest of the day, she said.
