Jason Rivera, 26, of Paterson was "extremely nervous," his hands trembling, as he spoke with the woman on the phone after Officer Mark Ciavirella stopped his 2006 BMW for equipment violations at Kime Avenue and Black Oak Ridge Road late Tuesday afternoon, Capt. Laurence Martin said.

There was a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the car, Martin added.

A search turned up pot in Rivera's left sock, after which the captain said Serena D. Jaber, 19, of Wayne showed up, shouting: "Why did you stop him?!"

After she was "advised strongly to not approach any closer because the officers were conducting a drug investigation," Martin said, Jaber "began to exhibit paranoia and complained that the police harass her and always circle her residence."

Backup Officer Gerard Venezia arrived, after which a search of the car turned up a bag of pot, 50 Ecstasy pills -- most of them stamped "Hello Kitty" -- and 34 Xanax pills, along with a used bong, he said.

Jaber "continued to act disorderly, specifically yelling and screaming and not leaving the area," the captain said, adding that she was "warned several times to not interfere with the investigation.

"Ms. Jaber did not comply, continued yelling and screaming, hanging out the side window of a vehicle on the busy street screaming obscenities and creating a disturbance," Martin said.

So she was arrested, he said.

Jaber was released on a summons charging her with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Rivera was ordered held in the Passaic County Jail pending a detention hearing, charged with various drug possession counts.
