The elderly victim told police that 25-year-old Mary Garrabrant persuaded him to give her the keys to his 2010 Ford Taurus on Sunday so she would have a place to sleep for the evening, Fairview Detective Capt. Martin Kahn told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
After taking off in the car, Garrabrant got into a crash in Weehawken and was arrested by police there, Kahn said.
They then contacted their Bergen counterparts after running her name through a national database and discovering she was wanted in connection with the theft.
A detainer carrying a bail of $2,500 was issued for Garrabrant, who was being held in the Hudson County Jail.
Garrabrant, who used to live on Walker Street in Fairview, is scheduled for an initial appearance Oct. 5 in Fairview Municipal Court. She is charged with third-degree theft.
Garrabrant had a month left to go on a year’s probation in exchange for pleading guilty to having pot and hash when she was arrested last year. Records show that at least one of her two children is in foster care.
