The academy included intensive CPR and first aid training for 40 of them conducted by EMT Christian Ventura at the borough firehouse .

Detective Jason Kangas directed the academy, with assistance from Police Chief Richard Gaito and his officers, as well as borough firefighters and EMTs.

The family of Petruzzello, who died after being struck by a car while on duty, helped make the academy possible, officials said.

Additional funds are still needed to bring more programs to borough youngsters. Donations can be made to The Borough of Cliffside Park, 525 Palisade Avenue, Cliffside Park NJ 07010. In the memo section of the check, write "Junior Police Academy" or "In memory of PO #133 Stephen Petruzzello."
