Israel Aguilar, who turned 25 a week ago, and 26-year-old Juan Aguilar are being held on $15,000 bail each in the Bergen County Jail, each charged with witness tampering.

Both Guatemalan nationals, the Aguilar brothers must remain in custody under federal detainers that could result in them being deported.

Fairview Police Chief Frank DelVecchio said his detectives recently learned that a 15-year-old victim in a sexual assault that led to the March 12 arrest of Elvirio Aguilar had been contacted by his brothers.

Elvirio Aguilar, forced his way into the home of the girl, threatened her with a piece of broken glass and knocked down her 5-year-old sibling, the chief said (SEE: Guatemalan native threatens 15-year-old sex partner with broken glass, police say).

He has been held on $150,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail since then, charged with aggravated sexual assault, burglary and hindering apprehension.

His brothers “were making contact with the juvenile victim and her family, pressuring them to drop the charges,” DelVecchio said.

“Physical harm was threatened upon the juvenile victim’s family” and continued after detectives began working the case, he said.

Juan Aguilar turned himself in at police headquarters after learning that a warrant had been obtained for his arrest, the chief said.

Fairview detectives then swooped in today and arrested Israel Aquilar at the family’s Wheeler Street home in Cliffside Park, he said.

Both are due in Fairview Municipal Court for a hearing tomorrow.
