The app, created by New York City-based animal charity foundation ResQWalk, will announce a donation pool each week.

In order for a shelter to receive the donations, supporters just need to check in using the app when they go for a walk.

"Currently, monthly costs range up to $13,000 a month for maintenance of the shelter. Medical care is an additional $10,000 per month," BCPR said in a statement.

Currently, the donation pools are being funded by ResQwalk's Indiegogo campaign.

The money will be paid out proportionately to the total distance walked, according to BCPR. In the future, the pools will be funded by corporate sponsorship, advertisements and revenue generated in the 'Shop' section of the app.

"Not only will this help people get healthier using their favorite mobile devices, it also means that underfunded animal rescues will have another source of donations they can rely on," the statement reads.

Bergen County Protect and Rescue Foundation, located at 302 2nd Street, was founded in 2012 by Bergen County Humane Enforcement Agent Vincent Ascolese.

The app is available for iPhones and Androids. It can be downloaded in the app store or at this link
