BOGOTA, N.J. — Humphrey and Scarlett's red, wrinkly faces are certainly unmistakable around Bogota.
Maybe you saw them wrestling on their lawn, or on a brisk, two-mile walk in Overpeck Park with their owners, Lizka and Jose Baez.
Most likely, though, you know the pair of Dogues de Bordeaux from its record-breaking win at Westminster Kennel Club's best-of-breed competition earlier this year.
"How can you not fall in love with them?" said Lizka Baez of her 2-year-old dogs. "They're the best."
The Westminster Kennel Club thinks so, too.
Scarlett and Humphrey were the first dogs in their breed with the same owner to take home "best in breed" and "best sex in breed" at the Westminster dog show at Pier 94 in February.
Lizka and Jose compared owning show dogs to raising young athletes.
"They eat all the time," Jose said. "And you travel with them everywhere."
The couple takes turns walking and running the dogs from sunrise to dusk.
Jose runs a mile with Humphrey almost every day and Lizka walks to the Teaneck border and back. Each dog has its own handler to condition them and teach them how to pose.
The Baez' never suspected this would be their life — but they wouldn't have it any other way.
"We look at it as a hobby," Jose said. "It's great, especially when you're winning."
