Garfield Therapist Specializes In Mankind's Oldest Medicine: Leeches

GARFIELD, N.J. — Andrew Plucinski of Garfield is not a doctor, but he has an idea of what might help with some ailments: Leeches.

Leech Therapist Andrew Plucinski said leeches are used across the world for many different purposes, but a stigma in the United States prevents most Americans from taking it seriously.

Officially titled a Hirudotherapist, Plucinski specializes in how leeches can relieve many ailments in the human body. Despite the medieval approach, he doesn't think his work is strange.

"This is the oldest medicine there is," Plucinski said.

"Leech therapy was already written in stone on the walls of Pharaohs' tombs."

Plucinski is skeptical of the necessity for laboratory-crafted medication when many natural remedies can help.

He said many people know about how leeches can be used, but the information gets lost.

"If I spent a billion dollars showing people how good leeches are, everyone would know it," Plucinski said.

He said the typical customer is not from America. He explained that most of the world uses leeches in the same ways he does but a heavy stigma remains in the United States.

The therapy works by having a leech secrete its naturally produced saliva that contains hundreds of chemicals to cleanse the body.

The typical session lasts between 30 minutes to an hour while customers await their leeches to work their magic.

He doesn't believe leeches can cure everything but stresses the importance of natural solutions instead of artificial medications made in factories.

Plucinski reminds interested parties that he is not a doctor and cannot diagnose illnesses, but for those hoping to receive natural remedies to ailments, they can contact his business line at 646.460.4212.

Plucinski works out of an office at 517 River Drive in Garfield. He has a main office in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. His website can be seen here.
