The next meeting is Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. in the library’s Mackay Room. The group meets the 2nd Thursday of each month, and the program is free and open to the public.

Writer Bob Haveson has established the meetings at the library, but stresses that people will take turns leading the group. The idea is to have a group of writers feeling free to express their work, and to encourage each other.

The group will determine over time how best to proceed. There are some initial suggestions to move the group along in its infancy. Click here to see a list of suggestions so far.

According to Haveson, growth comes easier with encouragement.

"We are encouraged two ways. One of the ways is when you enjoy something you hear, and hopefully, you will try to write something also," he said. "The second way is when we critique constructively while being polite and give credit for what parts we like, hopefully that will encourage the writer."

Haveson was an Electronic Engineer for 30 years. He also was a Calculus professor at Morris County College for 10 years, where he learned mentoring skills by experience. Over the years he has engaged in tutoring and voluntary teaching from English to different mathematics subjects.

He has written novels, short stories, and poetry and one musical for which he wrote the lyrics. Some of his stories have been selected for honors and some for honorable mention. He is currently in the process of publishing one of his novels.
