CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J.– Cliffside Park officials celebrated a milestone with a topping-off ceremony Thursday night after the Towne Center mall reached its maximum height.

"We celebrate this major construction milestone marking the symbolic completion of the structural phase of the Towne Centre project," Mayor Thomas Calabrese said.

The Towne Centre is Bergen County's largest project at 700,000-square-feet, Councilwoman Donna Spoto said.

The facility will feature a three-level parking garage, stores and 314 luxury apartment units across 13 levels. There will also be a pool deck, fitness center and common areas.

"This project is going to be the crown jewel of Anderson Avenue -- if not the crown jewel of southern Bergen County," Spoto said. "This will harken back to the days when the avenue was the 'it' place when we were growing up."

The project has been plagued by delays since the borough seized a dozen properties at the site in 2006 and leveled them in 2009 .

"It has been 10 years of extremely challenging work, which at times was frustrating and at other times satisfying," Calabrese said. "The vision and mission of the project was formed to bring economic vitality, jobs and a new quality of life to our community [and] to serve as an economic engine for our business district and our community."

Development is being completed by Jim Demetrakis and Fred Daibes of the Towne Centre Urban Renewal Company.

Excavation began in July 2012 after Towne Centre Urban Renewal Company obtained private financing through TD Bank.

A ribbon cutting is expected in the spring, Calabrese said.
