HackensackUMC Doctors Honored At 'Affair Of The Heart' Ball

HACKENSACK, N.J. --  Two physicians at Hackensack University Medical Center were awarded by the American Heart Association at its Annual Affair of the Heart Ball.

Robert L. Berkowitz, M.D., director of the Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension Program at the Heart & Vascular Hospital, HackensackUMC, has been named Physician of the Year. 

Carlos Ruiz, M.D., director, Structural and Congenital Heart Center at the Heart & Vascular Hospital, HackensackUMC has been named Co-Researcher of the Year by the American Heart Association at its Annual Affair of the Heart Ball. 

The 19th Annual Affair of the Heart Ball was held May 7 at The Grove in Cedar Grove.

“Dr. Berkowitz weaves compassion for his patients and expert use of the latest technologies in his tireless work in the Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension Program at HackensackUMC,” said Joseph Parrillo, M.D., chairman of the Heart & Vascular Hospital at HackensackUMC. “Dr. Ruiz has produced over 300 publications and given more than 500 presentations worldwide on new devices, ideas and ways to treat patients. 

Ruiz shared the 2016 Researcher of the Year Award with Robert M. Kipperman, M.D., Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at Morristown Medical Center. The Heart & Vascular Hospital, HackensackUMC’s “hospital within a hospital” provides a full-range of state-of-the-art invasive and non-invasive services, including electrophysiology studies, a state-designated cardiac catheterization center, and one of the largest cardiac surgery programs in the state. 

The American Heart Association’s 2016 Affair of the Heart Ball is a celebration of the mission, passion, work, and life-changing and life-saving achievements of the American Heart Association, American Stroke Association and its community of volunteer advocates, champions and leaders. 

The Affair of the Heart Ball recognizes and celebrates excellence in heart and stroke science, research, health care, treatment and community involvement; innovative and life-changing work that enables people from all walks of life to live healthier, stronger, longer lives.
