CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. — Fabian Arkliss sinks into the light brown leather couch in Cliffside Park’s ManCure and watches sports on the wall-mounted flat-screen TV.
Dressed in a dark-blue cardigan and flat-brimmed cap, the Englewood native shifts his gaze toward the manicurist as she unwraps the cellophane that’s been moisturizing his fingers.
Arkliss, 29, has never shied away from pampering himself. When he heard about ManCure, a salon just for men on Greenmount Avenue, there was no question of where Arkliss would go to unwind.
“I come and I relax with no stress or pressure,” he said. “I get the bomb hand massage, the bomb foot massage — it’s great.”
Candice DeJesus, 29, of Cliffside Park opened the store last month as a place for men like her husband.
“He always wanted to come with me [to the nail salon] and it embarrassed me,” she said. “I was, like, ‘Isn’t there a place where you can go?’”
Sure, there were barber shops that offered the same services. But the quality wasn’t great, DeJesus said.
That's when it hit her: How about a place where guys can kick back, without the ladies, and still get the same services?
“Grooming for men is really trending,” DeJesus said. “Guys want to look good, they want to feel good.
“They can grab a beer and throw the game on.”
ManCure has four couches, one for each customer, and offers manicures, pedicures, waxes, massages and facials.
Being pampered isn't just about looking good, Arkliss said.
“It’s about bettering yourself and treating yourself well,” he said. “I like my hands — my hands are mine and I want to treat them with respect and care.”
